Kaolin
Kaolin is an industrial clay derived from the chemical weathering or hydrothermal alteration of feldspar-rich rocks, particularly granite. Its principal mineral, Kaolinite [Al₂Si₂O₅(OH)₄], has a 1:1 layered aluminosilicate structure with strong interlayer hydrogen bonding, resulting in low swelling and relatively low cation exchange capacity. Industrial performance depends on mineral purity, particle size distribution, platelet morphology, brightness, and iron and titanium impurity levels. These parameters govern dispersion, rheology, optical properties, and suitability for specific formulations.
High Whiteness
Controlled calcination removes structural hydroxyl groups from Kaolin, producing a nonplastic mineral filler with optical properties determined by mineral purity and thermal treatment. Low iron and titanium impurity levels are essential for high whiteness and consistent color in finished formulations.
Chemical Stability
Kaolin has relatively low chemical reactivity under typical formulation conditions, allowing its use in many aqueous and polymer systems. Compatibility depends on pH, temperature, surface treatment, and exposure duration, particularly where strongly acidic or alkaline conditions can alter mineral behavior.
Effective Coverage
Controlled particle size distribution and effective dispersion reduce coarse particles and surface defects in finished products. Selected calcined grades increase light scattering and opacity, while viscosity and abrasion depend on particle morphology, mineral impurities, filler loading, and the formulation system.
Cost Efficiency
Appropriate Kaolin grade selection and controlled dispersion optimize filler incorporation and processing consistency within the formulation’s viscosity requirements. Optimized loading balances material costs with throughput, surface quality, and mechanical properties, improving production efficiency without exceeding the system’s practical processing limits.
